There are many ways to curl your hair. Besides the use of traditional rollers and curling irons, I have seen people curl their hair with elastics, bobby pins and even with paper. Choosing one of these more creative ways to curl your hair is a great alternative to using hot rollers and curling irons, which when used in the wrong way, can seriously damage your hair.
How to make curls using Bobby Pins
Whoever thought bobby pins could be used to create beautiful curls? Interestingly enough, bobby pins were traditionally used for curling woman’s hair in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s before curlers, hot rollers and curling irons had seen the light of day.
Here are a few tips before you start:
Leave your hair damp-wet after washing it. Take just a little bit of mousse or gel and smooth it on to your hair. Brush your hair through with a comb or a brush to equally divide the mousse or gel throughout your hair.
Then you can start sectioning your hair. Start by working with any natural parts in your hair. Grab a section of hair and comb it free of any tangles. The bigger the section, the looser the curl will come out. Conversely, the less hair you take, the tighter the curl will be and the longer it will last. Take the hair at the ends and roll it back in a circle towards your scalp. This takes a little practice but if this technique does not work for you, you can also try to grab the hair at the scalp instead of at the ends and start winding it around your finger as if making a tiny bun. Then hold the curl in place against your scalp with your fingers and pin it down with one or two bobby pins.
Repeat this with all strands until all the hair is in pin curls. Make sure the curls are wound in the same direction, for example, towards the face. Leave the pin curls in overnight. If you like you can cover your hair with a bandana or hair net to keep the pin curls in place. Now, if you are pressured for time you can also blow dry your hair but only on cool setting. When the hair is completely dry you can take out the pins.
Then you can gently start shaping your curls with a comb.
Like any other hair styling skill, making pin curls requires practice and experimentation – have fun with it!
