Winter can dry out the scalp, leaving hair damaged, limp and dull. Styling dry hair become difficult to manage and hair often become frizzy or even brittle due to cold conditions. There are some tricks to keeping hair healthy and shiny during those long, dry winter hair months.
- Wash hair every second or third day. This will help the natural oils from your hair moisturise your scalp, instead of drying it out from over-washing.
- Use conditioner daily. This will keep hair moisturised and shiny.
- Use dry shampoo instead of washing daily. This will help keep hair from drying out. A cheap, good dry shampoo is baby powder. Simply sprinkle some on and comb through hair to clean out.
- Tame static hair by spraying hair spray on a comb, and comb through after styling to fix stray hair.
- Try not to overuse hair dryer. Use it either on the ‘cool’ setting or, if possible, not at all.
- Try to avoid hot showers. Although they feel great in the winter months, they will dry out your hair even more. Try to wash it in warm or cool water. Cool water will lock in moisture.
- Use a leave-in conditioner, especially before using “hot” items like your curling iron or flat iron.
- Wear a scarf or hat when braving the cold weather. It will block out the harsh elements and help save your hair.
- Products that say replenish are great sources to moisturise and do exactly that, replenish hair.
- Never wear wet hair outside when it’s cold. It may freeze if it’s cold enough, become brittle and break.
- Avoid chemicals from perms and high-peroxide laden colour. Opt for low-lights or minimal highlights. Try using natural colour versus peroxide colours.
- Trim often. This will help you avoid breakage from split ends travelling up the strand in dryer, colder months. Dry hair starts at the ends.
- Eat a balanced diet: low-carb dieters tend to have drier hair.
